25.07.2010: The National Weather Service has confirmed that a small tornado hit the Bronx Sunday afternoon during a thunderstorm that left thousands without power in the metropolitan area. Meteorologists say the tornado with 100 mile-per-hour winds touched down in the Riverdale section of the Bronx at around 3 p.m. Sunday and lasted for about 10 minutes. The National Weather Service says it's the second tornado to hit the Bronx since 1950. The first was in 1974. Sunday's thunderstorms, which swept east through Nassau and Suffolk Counties, uprooted trees and knocked down power lines. Utility crews expect to restore all power by late Monday. A sailor fell overboard on the Long Island Sound during the storm and was missing Monday.
