Description:

Northlanders are being told to stay alert as the threat of flooding from rain-swollen rivers continues and road conditions remain precarious. Several people have been rescued from rising flood waters in Northland today as severe weather lashed the region. The Fire Service has been called to around 20 incidents, including two people who were trapped in a car in flood water and a family stuck in a flooded house. One person was washed down a hill and had to cling on to a tree to prevent getting swept away. Kerikeri High School was closed for the day and will decide whether to re-open tomorrow morning. Although rain has eased across much of the region this afternoon, the sheer volume of rain that has fallen poses a risk, said the Civil Defence. Northland Regional Council hydrologist Dale Hansen said rivers are still rising in some parts, particularly south of Kaikohe. "At 2pm today, levels in the upper reaches of the Kaeo, Kerikeri and Waitangi river catchments were easing, however, the lower reaches were continuing to rise due to the large amounts of rain earlier in the day," Hansen said.
