The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it is monitoring the Catawba nuclear power plant after offsite power was lost Wednesday. The NRC said it is monitoring the situation through inspectors at the plant and from its regional office in Atlanta. No radiation was released and there was no impact on plant workers or the public according to the NRC. The plant is operated by Duke Energy and is located in York, S.C. Duke declared an "unusual event," the lowest of the four NRC emergency classification levels, just after 8 p.m. One of two units at the plant was already shut down for a planned outage, and the second unit automatically shut down after losing offsite power. Diesel generators at the plant are supplying power to the units' emergency loads. Plant operators and staff are monitoring the situation and attempting to restore power. Safety systems are operating as needed. Duke notified the NRC about the outage and the agency's senior resident inspector was sent to the plant. The inspector is monitoring all activities and providing status updates to the NRC in Atlanta.
