Water quality tests have detected red tide around Marco Island, according to the Collier County Pollution Control and Prevention Department. Red tide, a bloom of microscopic algae, releases a toxin that can cause respiratory irritation in humans and can kill fish and other marine life. The Collier County Health Department and Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve found red tide at very low levels at South Marco Beach, Big Marco Pass and Caxambas Pass. Collier County has not received any reports of dead fish or respiratory irritation. More sampling is planned for Thursday.
