A widespread power outage, possibly brought on by one of the hottest days of the year, made conditions extra uncomfortable for thousands of people in the Erie region Tuesday. Power was knocked out for more than 20,000 electricity customers in Erie and nearby communities, affecting homes, businesses and drivers coping with nonworking traffic signals. The outage, striking sporadically throughout the area, occurred between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m., and it remained out throughout the night for thousands, according to Scott Surgeoner, a spokesman for FirstEnergy, the parent company of Penelec. "We believe the heat played a role in it, and over the next several days, we'll look at exactly what happened, but our priority right now is the restoration of the power,'' Surgeoner said. At 7:15 p.m., power was out for 15,000 customers in Erie; 5,000 in Millcreek Township; 1,500 in Summit Township; 1,600 in McKean Township; 160 in Harborcreek Township; and 36 in Wesleyville. Penelec began to restore power to some areas at about 9:15 p.m. Surgeoner said Penelec crews were working to restore power and hoped to have power to all customers restored overnight or this morning. "What is occurring, we believe, was due to high heat and demand -- high load,'' Surgeoner said. Penelec planned to take some of its equipment "out of service in the Erie area so we don't overload and potentially damage that equipment,'' Surgeoner said. "It will also help us prevent additional outages.'' Surgeoner said. Erie police said traffic lights in the city were out over much of Sassafras Street, and parts of State, Liberty and Peach streets. Power also was out over stretches of West 26th Street and East and West 38th streets, and the traffic light at East 12th and the Bayfront Connector, authorities said. As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, there were reports of a few minor traffic accidents in Erie, according to Erie County dispatch. Traffic near the Millcreek Mall was especially congested Tuesday evening. Millcreek police directed traffic on Peach Street near the mall, which lost its power. Traffic lights also were out on Peach Street from Interchange Road south to at least Walmart near Interstate 90, police said.
